Manufacturer Description The ultimate home video recording experience is the Sony HDR-UX7. Record high-definition video straight to DVD-R/- RW/+RW/+R DL (Dual Layer) media formats. This includes 5.1-channel surround sound, Super SteadyShot optical technology, an active interface shoe, 10x optical/20x digital zoom, and an assignable control dial, to name just a few of the HDR-UX7’s multitude of features. HDR-UX7 Highlights 3.2-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor The 1/2.9-inch ClearVid CMOS sensor provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (1080 lines of resolution in HD mode or 530 lines of horizontal resolution in SD mode) and 6.1-megapixel still image performance. Unlike traditional CCD Imagers, CMOS sensors require less power and provide better battery performance. Switchable HD/SD format recording The HDR-UX7 is capable of recording and playing back both High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) video recorded on standard 3-inch DVD media. Real-Time HD Codec engine Sony developed a Real Time MPEG Encode/Decode system with reduced energy consumption and compact size to fit inside a personal camcorder. This engine provides efficient MPEG2 compression, and recording and playback of clear HD images at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that High Definition video can be recorded on the same MiniDV cassettes as are used for SD recording. x.v. Color x.v.Color can capture or display nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors than currently possible. This provides a more accurate and vivid color range, for a more natural, lifelike overall experience. DVD format video recording The DVD recording format, in both MPEG2 (SD) and AVCHD delivers digital picture and sound quality comparable to that of MiniDV and High Definition, but on DVD. Playback of these DVDs couldn't be simpler (depending upon the playback device used). After finalizing the disc in the camcorder, the disc can play back in most DVD Players (SD), computers, Blu-Ray Disc players and even PlayStation 3 video game consoles. DVD-R/-RW/+RW and +R DL (Dual Layer) compatible The HDR-UX7 is compatible with a variety of DVD formats allowing the easy of use and simplicity found in DVD media. With DVD+RW media there is not a need to finalize the disc (minimum recording time required). Simply remove the finalized disc and insert the media into a compatible Blu- Ray Disc Player. 10x optical/20x digital zoom The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, the Digital Zoom Interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom. Professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario- Sonnar T* lens Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating that offers less glare and flare with increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfectg renditions of subtle tones. The additional T* coating on the lens further reduces unwanted glare and flare. 3.5-inch widescreen touch-panel Clear Photo Plus LCD The 3.5-inch 16:9 LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with imporoved resoltuion. The 211K-pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback, and the widescreen format makes shooting in 16:9 mode and composing shots even easier. Smooth slow record By increasing the record rate from 60 fields per second (fps) to 240 fps for 3 seconds allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. This is great for analyzing a golf swing or a viewing a bird in flight. In addition, record an audio track to narrate what is being seen in the video. Memory Stick Duo media slot Capture still images up to 2848 x 2136 resolution, directly onto Memory Stick Duo media for easy trasfer to PCs for emailing, printing or sharing with other compatible Memory Stick media devices. Dual record While recording video in high-definition, you have the ability to capture a 4.6-megapixel still image directly to Memory Stick Duo media. Super SteadyShot image stabilization system Picture stabilization system that uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera "shake" without compromising picture quality like some other digital stabilization systems. Tele Macro function Useful for shooting close up shots, but without having the camcorder casting a shadow on the subject. Images shot in the Tele Macro mode will have the subject properly focused with the background unfocused so that the subject stands out. Additional Features Built-in intelligent flash Super NightShot infrared system Scene Selection modes Picture effects Fader effects InfoLithium battery with AccuPower meter system Stamina battery power management system On-screen zoom and record buttons Easy Handycam button One-touch wide-angle shooting Manual focus Multi-language menu DVD format video recording

Very sturdy and comfortable to grip 2. AVCHD recording gives beautiful, breathtaking pictures. It captures more color than my eyes can. Outdoor shootings are incredible, even with just HD SP setting. Indoor is OK. 3. Big LCD 4. Nice NP-FH70 battery included 5. Downconverted AVCHD to Std Def DVD Video using the supplied software is incredible and retains the DD 5.1 sound as well. It matches or even surpasses the quality of the Sony top of the line std def DVD camcorder DCR-DVD508. 6. AVCHD can be recorded on a regular DVD-R media. We can combine multiple mini-DVD into one DVD-R for at least 1 hour video in AVCHD. Once the next generation HD player like Blu-ray becomes affordable, you can watch incredible HD picture using the regular DVD blanks. 7. Mini-DVD doesn't require you to connect the camcorder to PC when transferring the video to PC Cons: 1. Recording time. This is the trade-off of choosing Mini-DVD. One Mini-DVD can record only about 14 minutes at HQ setting and 18 minutes at SP. I haven't tried the highest HQ+ setting, I'm thinking like a Hummer gas mileage. 2. Heavier than average DVD-Camcorder. This is the trade-off of having very large CMOS sensor. 3. AVCHD playback options are very limited right now. Only the camcorder itself and Blu-ray player can play it. 4. Downconverting AVCHD to Std-Def DVD takes a lot of your PC muscle. I left it overnight and it was completed in the morning. 5. TOUCH SCREEN!!! Sony please get away from this very annoying feature. The beautiful glossy LCD screen is full of smudge from my fingerprint. Playing back to my TV using HDMI, I still have to open the LCD to press the play button, and the HDMI cable gets on the way when I try to open and close the LCD. Besides those cons I've mentioned above, it is still a great camera. I don't regret at all of choosing DVD. The decision of using tape vs. mini-DVD vs. HDD is yours. Every media has its own pros and cons, but you can't go wrong to go with HD camcorder right now. 23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Best value, Best Camera By Rob Robinson I was looking for a hard drive High Def camera. I purchased the JVC GZ HD7 and took it home. The camera was $1,800 and rated at much higher resolution but the picture quality was nothing compared to this Sony HDR UX7. Everyone complains about the 15 minute recording time in full High Def but I don't think that is a problem. If you think aboit it, how boring are home movies anyway! Short scenes, short clips for 15 total minutes is plenty of time to look at a home movie. If you need more time, say 30 minutes or more, just use two DVD-R's or a DVD+R DL. With the $1,800 Sony I had to buy another $400 DVD burner to get my movies onto DVD, with this little Sony, as soon as I finish shooting, the DVD is done! With the expensive JVC, the indoor recordings were terrible, with this little Sony they are stunning! I have done alot of research and spend alot of time at many elecronic stores, this Sony Camera is the Best Value for the money out there. If you just want to be able to record High Def movies fast and be able to have them on a DVD, this is the Camera for you. Don't worry about AVCHD format, very soon there will be many software programs to edit this format. I own 5 Macs and I know that in the next 2 months there will be at least 2 programs to edit AVCHD. The touch screen is awesome, very intuitive and easy to navigate. Despite the negative comments about getting finger prints on the screen, I like this function. Hey with clean hands the screen doesn't get that dirty! Quality and construction of this camera is the best I have seen. It is solid and feels awsome in your hands. You can buy this camera under $1,000 here at Amazon, don't bother with Electronic Stores. Happy recording, with this awesome camera. Rob 17 of 18 people

The stylish Canon HV20 gives you the ultimate in HD video and digital photo quality with advanced features for the knowledgeable and demanding videographer. Its 10x optical zoom lens, 2.96 Megapixel CMOS image sensor and Canon s advanced DIGIC DVII image processor ensures meticulous detail and superior color reproduction. 24p Cinema Mode brings film-look options to the HV20 owner- as never before in this class. And, with its HD and Standard Definition recording modes, you can make the move to HD without making your SD equipment obsolete.

Amazon Sales Rank: #5706 in Camera & Photo Brand: Canon Model: HV20 Released on: 2009-11-30 Dimensions: 1.19 pounds Display size: 2.7 HDV camcorder with 1/2.7-inch CMOS image sensor; 24p Cinema Mode High-definition 10x optical zoom lens; super-range optical image stabilizer Advanced photo features: up to 3-megapixel stills, histogram display, built-in flash, and more 2.7-inch color widescreen LCD; color viewfinder HDMI terminal; advanced accessory shoe

Manufacturer Description To tech-savvy, sophisticated, and discerning videographers who demand a premium quality camcorder, the Canon's HV20 enables the ultimate in HD video and still photo quality. The HV20 offers an unparalled combination of a 10x optical zoom, a 2.96-megapixel CMOS sensor, and a stylish design. With HD and SD recording modes, you can make the move to HD while retaining compatibility standard-definition equipment. Capturing meticulous detail and superior color reproduction, the HV20 raises the bar for HD resolution quality. HV20 Highlights HDV format The HV20 records true 1080 high-definition resolution video, and is capable of recording and playing back HD images using MiniDV cassette tapes. Canon True HD CMOS sensor The HV20 features a Canon-manufactured CMOS sensor. Similar to its use in Canon's EOS-series digital SLR cameras, CMOS reproduces high-resolution images with true HD information in movies. Canon's CMOS sensor acquires image information at 1920 x 1080. Canon's HD CMOS Sensor also features on-chip noise-reduction technology. The low noise technology feature means that even in dimly-lit scenes, the signals from each pixel are as pure as possible, with minimal "noise" or other aberrations. RGB Primary Color Filter Whether you're shooting video or photos, you will appreciate the HV20's stunning, high-definition image production. For rich, accurate color, the HV20 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter. It separates light into red, green, and blue color components, resulting in vibrant images with natural-looking tones similar to what you'd obtain from 3CCD camcorders. Genuine Canon 10x high-definition video lens The HV20 comes equipped with a Genuine Canon 10x HD video lens. An aspherical lens is used to help achieve low aberration and high resolution. The HV20 lens also features super-spectra coating technology, which lowers flare and ghosting. A new gradation ND system is used for better exposure in bright shooting situations. The lens design creates true HD image quality. DIGIC DV II image processor DIGIC DV II is Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing technology designed specifically for HD. Even though video and still images have different color requirements, DIGIC DV II HD digital signal processing ensures optimal image quality for both HD video and still images. Thanks to DIGIC DV II image processing, the HV20 produces video with improved color reproduction -- especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction, for images that are crystal clear. Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer The HV20 features Super-Range Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Utilizing a hybrid detection method (combining vector and gyro detection method), it corrects camera shake instantly for steady shots -- even when they're handheld at long focal lengths, or taken with the camera in motion. And unlike electronic stablization, which can cause a loss in image quality, the optical system corrects the shake while preserving the quality. It is even effective while taking photos. 24p Cinema Mode 24p Cinema Mode is a feature demanded by professional filmmakers and previously only available on pro-level camcorders. 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers a professional "film look." This mode is actually two different features, which can be used independantly or together, depending on the user's preferences: The frame rate changed to 24p -- the same frame rate as movie film The HV20 changes the color and tonal characteristics to make you feel like you are watching a movie in the theatre. Instant AF (Auto Focus) Instant AF is Canon's new and advanced autofocus system. Using a Hybrid Control system that combines an external sensor and a TVAF, Instant AF makes it easier to focus on previously difficult subjects. It dramatically decreases the time it takes to achieve proper focus and increases accuracy, especially in low-light and high-brightness situations. HDMI terminal The HDMI terminal transports high-definition video signals (with audio in one cable) to your HD television. Built-in electronic lens cover A built-in electronic lens cover automatically opens when the camcorder is turned on and closes when turned off. There is no dangling lens cover to lose. Advanced accessory shoe terminal The advanced accessory shoe allows the use of additional accessories such as a video light and directional microphone. Simultaneous photo shooting While shooting an HDV movie, you can simultaneously capture a 2-megapixel photo to a memory card by simply pressing the photo button. It's perfect for any time you don't want to miss a moment. Histogram display Commonly used in Canon's line of digital SLR cameras, the HV20 features a histogram display. With just one push of a button, the brightness information of a still image is revealed. This allows you to monitor image quality so you can make adjustments for the next shot. Program AE mode The HV20 gives you settings that automatically result in the best exposure settings for different conditions. Secen modes include: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight, and Fireworks. Each adjusts your camcorder's settings to compensate for different lighting conditions and different subjects. 9-Point Ai-AF mode Auto Intelligent Auto Focus ensures sharp images and creative flexibility. Even when your subject isn't in the center of the frame, the HV20's Ai-AF function will automatically select from 9 metering frames on the screen to help bring images into sharp focus. Built-in flash Capture superb images in low light and indoor photography settings. Built-in Ultra Video light Increase your low-light capabilities even further by shooting with the HV20. Featuring an Ultra Video light, the HV20 enables you to shoot subjects in color in low-light at distances up to 4.9 feet away. Mic/headphone terminal The HV20 features a microphone terminal for attaching an external microphone. The audio/video terminal doubles as a headphone terminal for monitoring sound while recording. The HV20 also offers manual audio level adjustment, giving the user precise control. Focus Assist function When shooting high definition, a properly focused subject is more critical than ever. With one push of the Focus Assist button (during manual focus setting), video zoom and peaking (for emphasizing image contours) are displayed. Not to worry, this is automatically cancelled when recording starts. Level and grid markers It's easy to keep your D120 level for more professional-looking video. Simply press the Level Shot Control button, and a horizontal marker appears in your viewfinder. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot to the marker and you know your camcorder is level. Also, the grid marker is very convenient for setting up the special balance in your shots. Since background colors vary, you can select from two line colors to make the lines easily visible. Variable zoom speed control with 5 presets With this innovative feature, you can always be sure of smooth, steady, professional-looking zoom shots. Simply select one of five pre-set zoom speeds. 3.1-megapixel photos Capture stunning 3.1-megapixel photos in 4:3 aspect ratio to a miniSD card, or 2-megapixel photos in 16:9 aspect ratio. Capture 2-megapixel still images from tape While playing the recorded movie, you can capture 2-megapixel still images onto a miniSD card, simply by pressing the Photo button. If you prefer, you can even capture 2-megapixel photos while recording HD video to tape. 2.7-inch widescreen LCD and widescreen color viewfinder A widescreen LCD and widescreen viewfinder lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your TV will display later. Print/Share button For fast, easy, one-touch printing of your photos at home, simply press the camcorder's Print & Share button. The button can also be used for one-touch downloading of your images to a computer.

CHARLOT The HV-20 is Canon's "flagship" camcorder, and received [...] "2007 Camcorder of the Year" award. It has the best low-light image quality in it's class (in 24p mode, using 1/48th second shutter speed), and CCI says that it has the overall best image quality of all comparable models. What I like about the HV-20: 1. High definition 1440x1080i video image, using MPEG-2 compression. The similar Canon HG-10 outputs the full 1920x1080i resolution, but since it uses the more aggressive MPEG-4 compression scheme, it's low light performance suffers. Another advantage of the HV-20 is that MPEG-2 is easier to edit than MPEG-4. 2. Manual focus control that is relatively easy to access. The focus control consists of a button and wheel placed just behind the lens on the left side. The button toggles between manual and auto focus and the wheel effects the actual focussing. A lens-mounted ring would be a lot better, but these have gone by the way side on consumer priced camcorders - you have to spend $2500 or more on a semi-pro model to get a focus ring nowadays. WHY MANUAL FOCUS IS IMPORTANT: Digital cameras in general often have trouble focusing in low light or low contrast situations, for example shooting seascapes on a foggy day where everything is shades of gray and outlines are blurry and dim. On auto focus, the camera will "hunt" back and forth trying to lock focus, or will lose lock and start hunting in the middle of a shot, ruining that take. You will get better results if you use manual focus in these conditions. 3. Stereo Microphone jack, mounted on the side instead of the front. If you buy any MiniDV camcorder, you will eventually want to use an external shotgun or lavalier microphone. The built-in mic on almost any MiniDV tape drive camcorder is going to pick up the whine from the tape drive and lens zoom motors; an external mic will eliminate this problem. NOTE: The HV-20's mic jack is a stereo input, so that you can use two separate mics with a y-cable, or a single mic with a Mono-to-Stereo adapter. Radio Shack sells a suitable one for $3.00, their part number is 274-374. I use it with the ATR-55 shotgun and ATR-35 lavalier mics I bought for use with the HV-20. If you don't use this type of adapter, a mono microphone will only give a signal to the left audio channel on the HV-20 camcorder, leaving the right channel silent. The adapter will split the signal from the mic equally to both channels, which sounds better. Canon sells a shotgun mic for this camera that is stereo, and uses the camera's hot shoe, but at $150 it was three time the price of the ATR-55 shotgun, so I passed on it. 4. Ability to do "pass-through" Analog-to-digital transcoding. For example, if you have old family videos shot on VHS or 8mm analog videotape, you can use the "pass-through" capability of the HV-20 to convert the analog video to 720x480i digital video that can then be edited on a computer. You connect a VCR or your old Hi-8 camcorder to the HV-20 with component video cables (that's the red, white, and yellow cables that come with the HV-20), then connect the HV-20 to your computer with a firewire cable. Start the capture software on the computer, then play the analog tape - the HV-20 will transcode the analog video to digital video and pass it to the computer. You can then perform whatever type of image clean-up your video software supports, and output your old wedding or baby videos to DVD! Not every camcorder supports this, so it was a bonus feature that drew me to the HV-20. 5. Decent ergonomics. The camera feels pretty good in the hand and the controls are pretty good, with a few exceptions, most notably the zoom rocker, which is very poor compared to the EXCELLENT zoom rocker on Canon's own HG-10. What a shame that the HV-20 doesn't share this zoom rocker with the HG-10! Sony's

The BEST Digital Camera for a multitude of applications By Al the Pal I have had mine since September of 1999 and it is fantastic! The best feature is the floppy disk storage media. You're out of town, no laptop mega-drive and out of storage? Buy a $5 box of disks and shoot for another month! I bought an extra battery for mine which is real handy when traveling. The battery life is real good - several hours of continuous shooting and viewing, even with the lower life battery supplied with the camera. These batteries also interchange with Sony video cameras, so you can get double duty out of them if you own a video camera also.I have used the camera to take pictures to email to family & friends, Fox & Friends, post on auction sites, send to publications and even just to print out on photo paper. I used the camera on a tripod to take pictures of kids on Santa's lap this past Christmas, printing them on photo paper with an ink jet printer - a terrific success! The quality was not quite 35mm SLR, but it was a whole lot better and faster than a cheap 35mm.I am now experimenting with the mpeg video mode for our local track team, many events are completed in less than the 1 minute limit in extended mode. We may post these to the students web sites eventually. All my old 52mm lense accessories fit this camera. The filters, effects lenses & etc. add to the creativity you can unleash with this camera. The ability to instantly check your work by viewing on the screen is impossible with 35mm. Many years ago I considered becoming a professional photographer and back then you had to do a test shot with a Polaroid to check lighting, composition and so on. I believe this camera will take the place of Polaroids in all applications. Don't throw out the old Nikon 35 yet though, for true quality work, you still need film. This camera also has a whole disk or single frame copy feature that is really nice if you want to give copies of your pictures away in the field. You can also delete unwanted frames to free disk space in the camera. The controls and menus for all these functions are intuitive and straight forward to use. Exposure control is also easily accomplished with a series of programable features. The shutter speed, apeture, flash and white balance can all be set manually if you don't want to use the automatic mode, which really is adequate for most situations. You will want to read the book first, but once you have the basics down, it is just infinite experimentation from there. You can't make a mistake - just reset and try again - you're not wasting expensive film!I would recommend getting a wide angle accessory lense; if you are taking pictures of large subjects in tight quarters, (no, I'm not talking about Santa Claus!), sometimes you can't backup far enough. An extra battery, as mentioned above, is also essential if you plan to use it traveling or on all day assignments. 66 of 66 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Flexibility By Dick Lutz I run a small newspaper. The FD91 has become so indispensable that I now own 2. I can lend one out to an experienced emulsion photographer and, when necessary, teach him/her the essentials of how to use it in 5-6 minutes. These flexible features make it perfect for my situation: The 14:1 zoom means less cropping, and therefore higher resolution in the final cropped photo; the swivel LCD means it's easy to shoot from a higher angle (like over heads of a crowd or from a low angle, or even around a corner; floppy-disk media means film is essentially unlimited, or limited only to roughly 8x the number of disks I'm willing to carry, and they're cheap so "film cost" is never a problem. Finally, of course, in a newspaper operation there are the digital camera advantages of immediate availability, unlimited no-cost shooting because there are no one-time film or processing costs. As to resolution, the

It also gives users a maximum burst rate of 40 shots per second for still images (maximum image size of 9.0 megapixels and maximum shooting capacity of 30 shots) that can now be used to photograph distant subjects thanks to the high-power zoom. It also enables up to 1,000 fps high-speed movie recording that captures motion that is ordinarily too fast for the human eye to see. The EX-FH100 allows users ranging from advanced amateur photographers to beginners to enjoy high-speed burst shooting. It is equipped with a mode dial that enables manual exposure burst shooting and also has a mode that makes high-speed burst shooting easy, a feature that sets the burst shooting speed to the optimal rate just by selecting the type of scene. Plus, enjoy high-quality photography even in dim indoor lighting by using a highly sensitive CMOS sensor. Casio EX-FH100 Highlights Wide-angle 24 mm 10x optical zoom lens in a compact body The EX-FH100 features a high-power zoom lens in a compact body measuring just 105.0 mm wide x 63.2 mm tall x 29.9 mm thick. The lens delivers all the freedom of zoom photography--from a wide-angle 24 mm to a 10x optical zoom that brings distant subjects right up close. Ultra-high speed burst shooting captures crucial moments at a speed of 40 shots per second This model can take up to 30 shots of 9.0 megapixel high-resolution images with high-speed burst shooting at a maximum speed of 40 shots per second. What is more, if the camera is set to Prerecord Continuous Shutter, users will not miss those critical moments even if they press the shutter a little late, since the camera starts shooting when the shutter button is only depressed halfway. High-speed movie recording at up to 1,000 fps The EXILIM EX-FH100 can record high-speed movies of motion that is ordinarily too fast for the human eye to see. Users can select a recording speed of 1,000 fps, 420 fps, 240 fps, or 120 fps. This model also has a mode that lets users to switch to high-speed recording at 240 fps or 120 fps by pressing a single button during normal movie recording (30 fps). High-speed recording allows users to enjoy dramatic, ultra slow-motion playback. Highly sensitive CMOS sensor Casio continues the quest for ever-higher picture quality, the foundation of every camera’s performance. This model incorporates a back-illuminated CMOS sensor that boasts nearly twice the usual sensitivity. This lets users take beautiful photos outside as well as high-quality, low-noise photos indoors or in other dim lighting. And of course, the model also comes with CMOS-shift image stabilization. Best Shot modes facilitate high-speed burst shooting and high-speed movie recording High-speed Night Scene and Portrait With the EX-FH100, users can take beautiful photos--even of human subjects at night--without worrying about photo blur. The camera can do this by internally combining images taken with a single press of the shutter button using highly sensitive high-speed burst shooting with the flash into a single, crystal-clear image. High-speed Lighting The EX-FH100 takes three images using high-speed burst shooting, adjusting the exposure for normal (standard), bright, and dim subjects, respectively, with a single press of the shutter button. These images are then combined into a single image inside the camera, enabling reproduction of full brightness throughout the photo and helping to avoid bad photos with washed out or overly dark areas when the scene is strongly backlit. High-Speed Burst Shooting Best Shot / High-Speed Movie Best Shot The EX-FH100 also has "High-Speed Burst Shooting Best Shot" and "High-Speed Movie Best Shot" modes that optimize the burst shooting or high-speed movie settings simply by selecting the type of scene to be photographed--such as a child, pet, or sports scene--at the critical moment or in slow motion. High-resolution HD Movie function The EX-FH100 also features an HD Movie function. Just press the dedicated Movie button to take beautiful movies at 1280x720 pixels. The camera is equipped with an HDMI terminal and stereo microphone, which enable users to enjoy a beautiful picture and realistic sound by connecting the camera to a large display TV.

By Black Lemon The Casio Exilim EX-FH100's four main draws over other cameras are it's low-light capability, its high speed burst photography, it's slow motion video, and it's loooong battery life. The excellent low-light performance comes (mostly) from the back-illuminated CMOS sensor which allows for more light gathering than traditional sensors. The camera takes a better shot in low-light situations than similarly sized cameras (small sensor cameras) without the backlit sensor (Sony however has a similar sensor called EXMOR on some of its newest models). The high speed features include both a high speed shutter that allows amazing action shots (30 shots at a rate of 40fps in burst mode), and high speed video filming for gorgeous slow-motion video (can slow 1 second down to 14 seconds at the max setting of 1,000fps). The camera further leverages the above features for some neat tricks in difficult lighting situations, which are unusual abilities for this compact form-factor. The sensor and high speed shutter are used together for several preset modes that help in low light. "Lighting Mode" is suggested for situations where parts of the frame are bright and other parts are dim -- it takes several high speed shots at various settings, then combines them for a more evenly lit image. There's a similar mode for night shots. The combination helps keep noise unnoticeable even at high ISOs. The stereo mic is a nice plus over most other cameras (though also present on the only current competitor to this product, Sony's Cyber Shot DSC-HX5V). Other notable features are the wide angle lens, and the availability of a mode that combines mechanical image stabilization with the continuous shutter mode to reduce blur. There are also modes that use the continuous shutter to record both before and after the shutter is fully depressed, to allow you to choose a different moment if for example the person you are photographing closes their eyes or changes their expression. Spec for spec, The Casio Exilim EX-FH100 and Sony's Cyber Shot DSC-HX5V are nearly identical. However, the Casio has a few advantages - a larger aperture, longer battery life (520 shots vs. 310 shots), a faster continuous shutter mode (40fps vs. 10 fps), slow motion video, the option of RAW format (useful if you like to manipulate images with professional photo tools), and priority modes (aperture, shutter - which are common but Sony omits them on the HX5V). On the other hand, the Sony allows use of the optical zoom while filming video (in movie mode the Casio only does digital zoom), has a panorama stitching mode, and has GPS capabilities with position & direction metadata. While the basic functions are easy to use - even switching from HD video to slow motion is just a toggle switch -- I suggest reading the full manual on the accompanying CD. Certain things are not obvious, such as how to find the two particular video modes that allows switching on-the-fly from HD video to VGA slow-motion video (you don't use the Regular vs. HS video toggle switch for this because doing so stops the recording. For a seamless transition, you actually set the toggle switch to HS mode, and then choose a setting in the menu for on-the-fly transitions, which are then operated via the left & right keys). Thankfully, Casio has eliminated the pointless video length limit they had put on the previous model, the FH10. Note that while 30fps video can be up to 720p HD, and slow-motion video at 120fps is VGA quality, increasing the slow-motion beyond this (max is 1,000fps) results in decreasing the screen area displayed as a trade-off to maintain video quality at that data transfer rate. Worth mentioning here is that video can be output via the mini-HDMI out port. A composite A/V cable is included, but if you want mini-HDMI to regular HDMI, you'll have to buy your own cable. Martin I bought this camcorder so I could take videos of my kids' sports teams. After 3 weekends of tournaments (and 15 or so hours of video, this camera was perfect for me. The DVD quality mode, 60 frames per second, is perfect for my needs. (I didn't even realize it had a 60 fps mode when I bought it, but that's the mode I use the most!). The HD modes are choppy at 30 fps and it only supports HD @ 30fps. Bottom Line: If you want weekend videos for cheap, this thing is GREAT! Cons: 1. There is no North American wall plug, it only comes with a European style plug. (But it charges just the same from a USB port and an iPhone wall charger works too! ) 2. The zoom only focuses AFTER you stop zooming so it's blurry during the zooming in/out. It's not a big deal for my needs, but just be aware. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good low cost HD Camcorder By M. Cochran Sometimes you get what you pay for. The Veho while is a great value for an HD camera, you must record in 720P to enable the anti-jitter feature to get a decent handle held video recording. Also outdoor recording is difficult in bright sunlight as the screen is hard to see. But then again for $159, it does get you clear HD videos with 5X zoom (while also hard to use in realtime). I'm keeping mine for the price, I'll just use a tri-pod more and live with the limitations. If you have kids and want to use it allot, you may want to set up to a higher priced unit. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. LUV IT By Courtney Evans Smooth, compact, and easy to use. Ease of use, convenient 4 mega pixel still while in video mode, easy connect base, and mpg video format right from the camera! Cons: Easy connect base (good and bad news), flash disabled with filters or lens, and a little slow to connect to the PC. I wanted ease of use, high quality picture, and good still performance - I got it all. I did the tech research on picture quality and the SR300 seemed to be rated the best by most of the experts. The CMOS capture device is what is used in very high end cameras, so I was expecting a decent picture. Here is the non-tech evaluation of the picture: on my Hi Def TV the picture quality from this camcorder is much better than normal TV picture and not quite as good as a high quality progressive scan DVD. It is better than I expected and I am VERY happy with the picture quality. The SR300 is easy to use and that is what I wanted. Point it and shoot. In video mode, it does 4 mega pixel pictures. While recording, you can capture 3 stills only. If you are in video mode and not recording, you can capture as many as you like up to the limit of the hard drive and/or memory stick. In straight still mode, it is a 6 mega pixel camera. If you are looking for super high quality still camera, this is not it. I went from a 2 mega pixel camera to this, so I am pleased with the quality and I don't have to always carry two cameras around. I am using this to capture kids and this is just what I need. The camera will record stills to the hard drive, so you do not need to have a memory stick. I purchased a 2 gig ultra II, kind of a waste since the camcorder can't write to the stick as fast as the stick operates, I could have saved some $$ with a less expensive stick, or no stick at all. A 2 gig stick gives you 600 pictures at 4 mega pixel. I like the base, it makes it easy to have the camera ready to use. The thing I don't like is that you must use it to transfer video and stills to your computer from the hard drive (cable included). This can be a pain. You can connect the camera directly to the TV to watch video (cable included). When you attach a filter or an auxiliary lens, I bought a wide angle lens, the flash is disabled. This I do not like. Video from this camera is in mpg format, the same used for DVDs, so your DVD software does not have to convert the files. Also, this camera will write directly to a DVD recorder. I created a DVD with my , directly from the camera using the Disc Burn button and it included both video and pictures. I am able to quickly make DVDs using Nero without converting the files. This cam also connects directly to a printer using Pict Bridge feature. This is an expensive camera that had everything I wanted: easy to use; good quality video; compact size; and good still pictures. Sometimes you need to spend the extra to get what you want. I also bought the Sony ACC-FH60 accessory kit that includes a camera case and a second battery, check it out. 52 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Excellent first impressions By Mohamed I. Talaat I've been using it for a couple of days, and I love it. The harddisk is a gift, once you get used to it, you'll never want to use tape again. The USB 2.0 transfer to your computer works like a charm and it's pretty quick even for very large files, also because the video file types are mpeg, dvd authoring software doesn't take forever to compile a dvd, it's very quick. There are a couple of simple, yet powerful editing features using the camcorder itself. The interface is pretty intuitive, and the touch screen is very accessible even for my thick thumbs. The video picture quality is excellent in medium light, but weak in low light still 'far better than my previous Canon ZR70 though'. The stand still camera is not that good, compared to my current Sony P8. I love the slow motion feature,

Most helpful customer reviews 27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. easy and excellent By W. Murphy After MUCH research, trial and error, and actually trying 3 other video cameras, this is the one we stuck with. We even went to some local stores that had cameras on display, loaded in a blank dvd, shot some footage, and compared them at home on our 56" HD DLP TV. Clarity of picture, ease of use, quick and easy transfer to pc and burning to dvd, quick and clear focusing....all these were high priority when we shopped around. We wanted to also be able to take still shots with reasonable results, so we went for something with a high megapixel. We tried other Sonys, several Canons and a Panasonic, all priced from $300 to $800. This was the one that came out tops in all categories. Touch screen controls are easy to use and intuitive. Manual is clear and well organized (especially compared to the indecipherable Canon instructions!) Software is very basic but does the job it's meant to do. Some customization in the software, but if you want anything fancy you'll need to buy something else (none of the cameras came with anything amazing as far as video software goes). Transfer of videos or pics to pc is quick and very easy. Zoom may not be the highest of other cameras out there but it's quick, quiet, focuses fast (unlike the Canon, which at times was unable to focus at all). Night shot button is easy to use and does the job well, although we shot video in a poorly lit restaurant ("ambient light") without the night shot on and it came out really well. Still shots are easy to take, though if you're looking to snap a shot quickly, stick with a dedicated still camera. It takes a while for the camera to be ready to go, and time between shots is considerable. Still, they come out far better than the other cameras did and works fine for what we wanted; the ability to take video or reasonable quality stills, without having to carry around a lot of gear. I plan to buy a digital camera for those times when very high quality, or speed, is important. At todays low prices, it's worth the investment. So in closing, well worth the money (GREAT deal at Amazon, compared to local stores, chains, or other online sites). One Great Camcorder By Tony Wiggins I recently purchased the Sony DVD508. The picture quality is "Excellent". I've been a professional photographer for over 15 years and I can tell the difference between a average quality video and a fine quality video. This camcorder is on of the best that i've used. For under $800 it gives you the best bang for your buck. The camcorder is easy to use. It took me approximately 15 minutes to install the software onto my computer. I use pinnacle studio 11 for editing the frames, which is relatively easy for an amateur or pro. Again, you will absolutely love the quality of your end product, which is all that really matters. 25 of 28 people found the following review helpful. I like it a lot... By S. Smith I've now had this camera for about a month now and I couldn't be happier. The video quality is STUNNING as well as the recording sounds. It comes with a base and proprietary power and video cords (both component-HD and composite, which means that they are not interchangable with over the counter video cords), but thats ok. It also has the software for transferring the videos and photos to your CPU. Back to the picture and sound... amazing really. The sound records in 5.1 surround which is so cool, plus you have many options on the video such as night vision, black and white, sepia, old movie mold, etc and some of them you can combine (I did night vision with black and white to make a short zombie movie, it looks wicked). There are so many possibilities with this cam. The play back is all touch screen, which the screen can get smeared by fingerprints (easy to wipe out), but I suggest buying a stylus. Of course if you hook it to your television, it does come with a remote control, and you can do everything with that remote except for deleting images. But that is a positive because you don't want to accidentally delete your images. And it does ask for you to confirm deleting so it's hard to do that accidentally. Plus, it's a great photography camera. With the flick of a thumb you can change from filming to photographer easy and it takes crystal clear pictures in 10.5 mega pixel. Although I do find it a bit awkward to reach the photo button. Now it takes better picture in photo mode, then it do in filming mode (While filming you can snap a picture also), Another word on the night vision, I had all the lights off and it films in that greenish color sort of like the movie Cloverfield. But even filming at night without the night vision on, it picks up everything. I had a buddy drive at night, while I was shooting and the only lights were coming from headlights and streetlamps (when we passed them) and you saw everything on the camera that you could see with you naked eye and I even thought it was better than my eye. Now when you film and take pictures, it organizes the images according to date and when you film several scenes it will play them one after another without a bit of a pause. The camera also has little doors on the back and the side so you can hook up your cords without the base, which is good. Also inside of one of the doors are an hdmi output, a headphones output and a mic input. I ran my iPod through the mic input to make a music video and it turned out great (although be sure not to have your iPod any louder than half). The camera also has a one touch DVD burning button on the camera and the base, but I haven't used it yet. The only real negative is that the battery only last 90 minutes, but I bought a bigger battery, which last 14 hours. That battery weighs as much or more than the camera (the camera is really light) and it sticks out the back some but that isn't really that big of a deal. The software is pretty smart. You hook the camcorder with the use of the provided usb cable (after loading the software) and it finds the camcorder and asks if you want to transfer all the items to your computer. But the cool thing is that you can keep those images on your camcorder after transfer, film other stuff, hook you camera back up to the computer and it will only transfer items that haven't been transferred yet. This is good because you don't have to try to figure out what has or haven't been transfer and you don't get dup copies, or that annoying message about whether you want to overwrite a file. And it organizes by date and you can do a total calendar view and see what dates you filmed on. When it organized and transfer to your CPU, it organized by date filmed, not date transfer, which is extremely helpful, especially if you visit multiple locations during multiple dates. This is really the

Wu Disclaimer - I have the HDR-PJ10, not the 50V, but as far as I can tell the projector is the same between the two models. the most important question you probably have if you are reading this review. HOW IS THE PROJECTOR AND IS IT WORTH IT? The projector is a lot of fun to play with. If you like having envious friends drooling over your latest gadget, this is for you. Although it only puts out 10 ANSI lumens, it's reasonable for sharing videos. The overall experience reminds me of looking at vacation slides when I was young. Sony claims that you can get up to a 60" (diagonal) image and you can actually get more, but the display gets to be very, very dim. I would say that in a lighted room, a 20-24" projected image is acceptable. Since brightness falls off as the square of the distance, it gets dim pretty fast and by the time you have a 30-40" display size you need to be in a very dark room for it to be viewable. The focal length for the projector is fairly long - that 20" display requires 3 feet between projector and wall. At 5 feet you get a 33" diagonal display, and at 8 feet you get 53" diagonal. There's a focus slider on the top and the volume on the built in stereo speakers is surprisingly good, but you still will need people to keep quiet if you want to hear. Is it worth it? The best estimate on cost of this feature is to compare the PJ10 with the Sony HDR- CX160 which is the closest Sony camcorder without a projector. It costs about five bills while the PJ10 is 7, so it's about two Benjamins or 40% more for this feature. (Our gracious hosts here dislike us discussing price but I think it's a very valid point) If you look at the 3M Pocket Projector MPRO120--.33LBS, which costs around this much, it has 12 lumens and a resolution of 1280x800. I'm having a hard time confirming the resolution on the Sony projector but it is surprisingly sharp. There's something to be said for having the projector cleanly integrated into the camcorder. In comparing the PJ10 to it's two bigger brothers and it's projectorless cousin, I'd note that they all appear to have the same sensor and image processor so image quality should be the same. Similarly they all carry the same 3" touch screen. The main difference is with the bells and whistles (and of course, the price). Interestingly enough, the two "lower" models have (IMO) the better optics (30x zoom) Model.........Internal....Optical..Digital...35mm Lens Eq. .................Memory......Zoom...Zoom....(16x9 Movie) ---------....----------..-----....-----....------------ HDR-PJ50V...220Gb HDD....12x...160x.....29.8mm - 357.6mm HDR-PJ30V...32Gb Flash....12x...160x.....29.8mm - 357.6mm HDR-PJ10.....16Gb Flash....30x....350x.....29.8mm - 894mm HDR-CX160...16Gb Flash...30x...350x.....29.8mm - 894mm A couple of key items the PJ10 is missing - It doesn't have a GPS Tag, built in video light and it only shoots at 60i and 60p where the PJ30 and 50 can also do 24p. Should you care? The LED light would be nice - as far as 24p, if you don't know what a video pulldown ratio is, then trust me, you won't care. GPS - well, I'm not into Geotagging so I'd say no. The 30V and 50V are actually about the same price - both a pretty big jump over the PJ10. My opinion is to stick with the PJ10, or if you don't need a projector, go with the CX160 Do note that the PJ30 takes still images at 7 MP instead of 3 MP. This makes the PJ30 a somewhat reasonable replacement for a P&S still camera, but we have a DSLR so we certainly won't be replacing that. Likes: Projector - super, super neat and convenient for sharing videos. "Highlight reel" feature makes it even more fun, though the music not my taste. "Golf Shot" works well for soccer and other action shots. WIDE angle lens from the get go makes shooting birthday gatherings, etc much more practical. STEREO speakers on playback give some serious

Manufacturer Description Details matter, so don't let the finer things in life pass you by. Record in full HD and re-live your memories years from now in exceptional detail, color and sound. Boosting an impressive 40GB built-in hard disk drive, Sony's HDR-SR5 Handycam camcorder lets you record up to 15 hours of high-definition digital video, while its professional-grade Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens ensures stunning image quality with 10x optical/80x digital zoom, bringing the action closer to you. To make life easier, capture both video and still digital imagery at the same time without switching modes, in Dual Record Mode function. With the HDR-SR5 Handycam camcorder in hand, capturing life's precious moments is simple. Sony HDR-SR5 Highlights High Image Quality SD vs. HD-quality video HD quality advantage for beautiful video images Preserve life’s precious moments in highly clear HD images with 4.5 times more resolution than that of SD (Standard Definition) video. One look is all you need to see the difference. With Sony’s HD video technologies of ClearVid CMOS Sensor and Enhanced Imaging Processor, striking video plus 4-megapixel still images are sure to make the wonders you experience today into tomorrow’s beautiful memories. ClearVid CMOS sensor and Enhanced Image Processor (EIP) A powerful combination of Sony’s advanced HD video technologies, the EIP is configured to handle an enormous amount of HD image data at high speed from the ClearVid CMOS Sensor. Maximizing resolution and sensitivity while lowering noise, this technology delivers remarkable detail and clarity to enhance the quality of video and still images. Sony’s original ClearVid CMOS Sensor has a distinct structure that aligns each imaging element at a 45-degree angle to accommodate a larger proportion of pixels over a standard layout. It is designed to increase the amount of recorded green pixels for higher resolution with precise details the human eye can easily distinguish. The Enhanced Imaging Processor works together with the ClearVid CMOS Sensor to provide high performance through high-speed signal transmission of massive pixel data. This enhanced technology offers a number of user benefits and handy functionality like Dual Rec function to capture still images even while shooting video footage and Smooth Slow Rec function for slow motion that highlights details of actions from golf swings to football goals. 4-megapixel still image capture Users now can also shoot crisp and detailed 4-megapixel still images -- at 2.3 megapixels while simultaneously shooting video footage -- thanks to the exceptional combination of the Enhanced Imaging Processor and the ClearVid CMOS Sensor. The ClearVid CMOS sensor delivers superior low-light performance High sensitivity High sensitivity against low-light conditions is another advantage of the ClearVid CMOS Sensor. Even in darkly lit rooms, video recording with HDR-SR5 results in brighter images with more precise details and minimal noise. One user benefit is shooting party events like birthday cake presentations when lighting is very dim. Another benefit of ClearVid CMOS Sensor technology is smear-free images even when strong light sources are present in a frame. A wider dynamic range is available so that details in the shade of shots taken on sunny days or in brightly-lit scenes are preserved and not lost in darkness, thus minimizing the occurrence of black-crush or blowout while delivering rich gradation. x.v. Color x.v.Color conforms to xvYCC, an international standard for color space in video endorsed by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). The xvYCC standard expresses a color range 1.8x wider than the conventional sRGB color space. The multi-layer T* coating minimizes glare When played back on an x.v.Color-compliant TV, various colors like brilliant hues of flowers and the turquoise blue of the sea can be more faithfully reproduced. x.v.Color-supported Handycam camcorders deliver high-resolution HD performance as well as rich color reproduction. Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens Jointly developed for Handycam camcorders by Sony and acclaimed optical manufacturer Carl Zeiss, this lens delivers reliable results and images of consistently high quality, typical of the German lens maker, that precisely capture the atmosphere of a scene. For maintaining their consistently high quality, these lenses are manufactured under a rigorous quality control system (lens block even has a separately indicated serial number). It adopts the Modular Transfer Function (MTF) measurement system as a key indicator of image quality. Further assurance of image quality is a lens surface enhanced by a multi-layer T*-coating to effectively suppress unwanted ghost and flare while increasing contrast. HD Video on HDD Shooting video The HDR-SR5 records video footage on a built-in hard disk drive (HDD) with a large 40GB capacity -- up to around 15 hours and 10 minutes of HD video in the AVCHD 5M (LP) high-definition mode or around 5 hours and 20 minutes in the AVCHD 15M (XP) mode. Conventional MPEG2-PS is also supported, allowing SD video recording. Thanks to the nature of non-linear media, you don’t have to worry about over-writing recorded footage: new data is automatically written in blank, unrecorded space on the HDD. Moreover, you can immediately watch or erase newly recorded footage without rewinding. Just press the desired thumbnail on the touch-panel LCD. Viewing video To enjoy watching your HD video footage on a large screen, just connect the HDR-SR5 with your HD television via HDMI or component terminal. You can also play footage on a connected SD TV at SD quality. Either way, playback is easy and you can skip to any scene immediately, thanks to the random accessibility of non-linear HDD media, by simply pressing the touch-panel LCD with your finger. Archiving video Archiving your original HD or SD footage is extremely easy. Use the One Touch Disc Burn button on the bundled Handycam Station to quickly burn discs on a connected PC with a single press. This intelligent function only burns new footage shot since the last disc was burned with this function. If you choose to record discs in the AVCHD format, you can play back HD-quality movies on PlayStation3 as well as Blu-ray players and recorders. You can also transfer content from the HDR-SR5 to the HDD of a connected PC via Easy PC Backup. This function conveniently only transfers files recorded since your last backup with this function. Using the Write-back (AVCHD) function of supplied Picture Motion Browser software, you can later export footage back to the HDR-SR5 for easy playback on your HD or SD TV. HDD Smart Protection Should the HDR-SR5 be dropped or knocked, HDD Smart Protection helps protect the HDD and your important footage via three protective measures. A unique shock absorber around the HDD helps absorb the energy of impact. An advanced 3G sensor disengages the HDD read/write head to help prevent scratches when it detects a loss of gravity. And a drop stream buffer stores footage that the HDR-SR5 continues to record. Once drop-detection has been cleared, the HDD is re-engaged and content is transferred from the buffer to the HDD to help ensure seamless, uninterrupted footage. Note: HDD Smart Protection does not guarantee prevention of HDD breakage. Handy Features User-friendly interface Every detail of the user interface is refined to simplify operation. Convenient navigation features, ergonomic controls, and accurate LCD colors all contribute to pleasurable, user-friendly performance. Home Menu and Option Menu Like the top page of a Web site, the Home Menu is the starting point for all operations. To record or play footage, change settings or edit scenes, first press the Home Menu icon on the top left of the touch panel or the Home Menu hardware button below the LCD. Then select the desired category from the Home Menu. The Option Menu provides quick access to the settings you need. Whether you’re shooting or playing footage, just press the Option Menu icon on the touch panel to display available settings for the current mode of operation. Then adjust settings as desired. Quick and easy navigation to desired scenes Helpful search functions accelerate and simplify navigation. New Film Roll Index and Face Index functions, in addition to Visual Index and Date Index, make every search fast, easy and enjoyable. The built-in microphone captures 5.1-channel surround sound Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound Whenever you’re shooting footage, you can record audio through the built-in microphone as Dolby Digital 5.1-channel Surround Sound. This feature further raises the sense of realism when you play back your HD footage on connected, compatible systems. If you record the footage on AVCHD format discs, you can also enjoy 5.1-channel surround sound on AVCHD-compatible Blu-ray players and recorders as well as PlayStation3. Note: The camcorder plays the sound in two-channel stereo. Smooth Slow Record (with audio) Action sequences of 3 seconds become 12 seconds of slow motion playback with smooth, high-quality results. Just activate this feature and shoot any 3-second action sequence, such as a golf swing or football kick. Record 12 seconds of audio right afterward, if desired. Then play back the sequence and enjoy 12 seconds of stunning slow motion video with your voice recording simultaneously playing clearly at normal speed. It’s fun to watch and perfect for close analysis of sports moves. This remarkable feature was made possible by the exceptional combination of Sony’s high-quality ClearVid CMOS Sensor and Enhanced Imaging Processor. Scene Selection Scene Selection modes let you easily create beautiful images in almost any type of setting. Whether capturing a sunset with friends in the foreground and illuminated skyscrapers in the background, natural beauty at beach resorts, fireworks bursting at night, or festive white landscapes of snow, the results are as spectacular as the scene you shoot. The Portrait mode, for example, brings out such subjects as people or flowers while creating a soft background. Super NightShot In dark environments, you can capture subjects without using a flash. Just flick on the Super NightShot feature, which records images via infrared rays. Even in pitch black settings, with light as low as 0 lux, it lets you record sleeping children, camping scenes, and nocturnal animals without waking subjects from their slumber or disturbing their natural ways. Note: Super NightShot can be used whether shooting moving or still images. It does not accurately reproduce colors. It can only be used with certain other settings and should not be used in bright settings, which may cause damage to the camera. Easy Handycam Press the Easy Handycam button to enable carefree point-and-shoot operation with all settings automatically adjusted to match the shooting situation. This function is especially convenient for beginners who want operation to be as simple as possible. Long-lasting Stamina battery The HDR-SR5 allows up to 5 hours of shooting pleasure per charge when using Sony’s optional NP-FH100 InfoLithium Stamina battery. Compact, lightweight and convenient, this battery employs ActiForce technology for fast recharging and InfoLithium for displaying the remaining battery power in minutes on the Handycam LCD. Auto lens cover When you power up the HDR-SR5, its lens cover automatically opens. So you no longer have to worry about removing the lens cover or accidentally shooting with it on. Beautiful Still Images High-quality, 4-megapixel still images In addition to capturing moving images, the HDR-SR5 can capture high-quality still images whenever you like. These images are shot at a resolution of up to 4 megapixels (2304 x 1728 pixels), which is ample for producing large, high-quality prints. 2.3-megapixel dual record function This remarkable function lets you shoot fine-quality 2.3-megapixel still images while capturing moving images at the same time. Simply press the Photo button while shooting in the movie mode. Note: You can take up to 3 still images per movie sequence. After using the Dual Rec function, there is a 3-10 sec. interval of standby time before recording can resume. Frame extraction for 3-megapixel equivalent still image quality Making still images of special moments from your video footage is easy with the HDR-SR5. After shooting HD video and exporting it to your PC, just use the bundled PC software to extract any desired frame. Sony’s super-resolution technology enhances 1.5-megapixel HD video images to produce impressive 3-megapixel-equivalent still image quality. These photos can be printed with excellent results. Intelligent flash for still image shooting Whenever you shoot still images with the HDR-SR5, its built-in flash lets you set up flash on/off, and choose different flash modes to suit the situation and your own personal preference. Useful for shooting still images in dark places or indoors, this convenient feature provides Preflash for metering subject exposure. Print pictures without a PC Direct printing from Handycam You can easily print still images without using a PC. Just insert your Memory Stick media in a DPP-FP90/70/60 digital photo printer, select images on the high quality colour LCD, and print away! I really like the quality for the most part and having the video go directly to a digitized format is awesome. However, I do have some serious problems with a few things. 1. No USB connection on the camera body. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, I really don't understand why they didn't add a port as important as the one for the USB connection directly on the camera body. That is basically the only way for you to transfer the video files directly to your computer. It seems like either of the ports for the A/V Out or the Component connection (which I hardly use) could have been left to the base if it was a space issue, or perhaps even the mini-HDMI port (which I think they should have included an adapter to standard HDMI for). If they HAD included the USB port on the camera body, there wouldn't be a need for the base at all. The more I think about it, the more nonsensical it seems. Of course, perhaps there was some engineering issue that made it more feasible....but for $700 bucks, I don't want to have to make excuses for them or figure out why they made something more complicated when it could have been so simple. Also, although the newer versions USB seem to be overtaking firewire, they could have put that type of connection on the base rather than additional component and A/V ports which are already on the camera body. 2. Shooting in low light has lots of noise. --------------------------------------------------------------------- I thought the CMOS sensor on this camera was supposed to eliminate noise in low light situations, but from what I can tell, shooting outside at night or even in dark rooms, there's plenty of noticeable noise in the dark regions of the video image, even when shooting at the highest quality level, HD XP. I don't know if it's something I can have checked out, perhaps my sensor just isn't working properly, but in any case, that's been somewhat of a disappointment for me. What I expected was video quality like that in the movie Collateral, which had lots of great night shots using HD cameras. Maybe that is a bit too much for a consumer camera, but still, I expected more. Also, another problem that I've found with night shots, is that the auto-focus has a really hard time getting zeroed in on the right area. I usually have to end up focusing it manually if I want a consistently clear shot at night. 3. The bundled software doesn't convert to an uncompressed format. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Since AVCHD is a relatively new format, I was certain that they would have a feature in the software to convert clips to some more universal uncompressed format. But the software that comes with the camera only has the option to export the video to MPEG2, which creates a clear loss in quality. So, I don't understand why they wouldn't make it easier for us to convert the video into some more widely used format with that losing that HD clarity. I know there are third party applications that do this, but Sony should have provided this feature with the camera. Additionally, working with the AVCHD format is a pain in general. In order to view the video on your computer as a video file, you have to import it using the Sony Picture Utility software that comes on a CD-ROM with the camera. When it imports the files to a selected destination folder, you actually get 3 files for every video clip you've shot. The extensions are 'm2tsm', 'modd', and 'moff'. The 'm2tsm' file is the one that actually contains the video data (I had to assume since it's always the largest). I'm not sure what the others are for. Even after you've installed all the provided software, you can't just double click a video file to open it. You have to "Register" the folder the video files are in in the
