Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 4MP Digital Camera with Anti Shake 12x Optical Zoom

MD) CL) MINOLTA DIMAGE Z-3 DIG CAM

Amazon Sales Rank: #9143 in Camera & Photo Brand: Konica-Minolta Model: 2733151 Released on: 2009-11-30 Original language: English Dimensions: 1.00 pounds Display size: 1.5 4-megapixel sensor captures enough detail to create photo-quality 11-by-15-inch enlargements Konica Minolta GT APO 12x optical zoom with CCD-shift anti-shake system; combines with 4x digital zoom for 48x total zoom Fastest autofocus in its class (May 2004); captures movies with sound; PictBridge compatible Store images on Secure Digital (SD) memory cards; 16 MB SD card included Powered by 4 AA-size batteries (alkaline included, rechargeable NiMH recommended)

From the Manufacturer Konica Minolta Photo Imaging U.S.A., Inc.'s new Dimage Z3 4.0 megapixel digital camera is the first Z-series camera to feature Konica Minolta proprietary Anti-Shake system. This new camera provides photographers with high-quality images and features a wide range of convenient and easy-to-use high-end functions. Further Advances in Rapid Autofocus (AF) with Predictive Focus Control See detailed views of the Z3's features: Front Back The Dimage Z3 incorporates an AF-dedicated ASIC to video AF system. Focusing takes a mere 0.15 seconds at wide angle and only 0.20 seconds at telephoto. And in Continuous AF, the Dimage Z3 includes Predictive Focus Control, which allows photographers to capture sharper images of moving subjects—like a child running at full speed. The Dimage Z3 also features a faster focusing lens drive that moves the focusing lens more than twice as fast as the previous Z-series model. Its Quick Speed Image Readout in AF function reads images from the CCD at a rate of 100 frames per second from when the shutter-release button is pressed partway until the image is brought into focus, giving contrast information in half the time of normal mode (50 frames per second). With Optimized AF Sequence, in Video AF the Dimage Z3 uses AF Sequence Control to simultaneously determine the focus drive direction and drive the lens to the position of maximum contrast through repeated focusing. This means that focusing operations start as soon as the shutter-release button is pressed partway. The Dimage Z3 also offers improved AF accuracy through several features. 5-point Area AF provides five focus areas that overlap horizontally and thus reduce AF failures that occur when subjects appear in between focus areas and cause a perspective conflict. A human subject sensor algorithm uses color information in an AF area to prioritize and focus on that area if it is more than 50% occupied by flesh tone. This reduces shots that erroneously focus on a background rather than on the person in the picture. CCD-Shift Anti-Shake Function The Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 is the first Z-series model to include Konica Minolta's Anti-Shake function. This gives photographers unprecedented control and accuracy when taking pictures in low light situations, as well as when fully-extending and hand-holding the camera's 12x optical zoom lens. The high-precision CCD-shift method employs the proprietary Smooth Impact Drive Mechanism (SIDM), in which angular velocity sensors detect the degree of shaking and move the CCD to compensate for and correct this. The SIDM enables compensation to minimize the effect of camera shake at 2-3 shutter speeds slower than on cameras without an Anti-Shake function (depending on conditions; equivalent to 2-3 exposure increments). The Dimage Z3 can correct shaking without increasing shutter speed and raising ISO sensitivity, factors which increase image noise. In addition, users won't see the deterioration in image quality usually associated with electronic anti-shake systems. The CCD-shift method doesn't require extra correction lenses like optical anti-shake systems, so the Dimage Z3's body is compact and lightweight. The Dimage Z3's anti-shake system is effective in correcting both the fine movement of pressing the shutter-release button and the larger and slower movements of the user's body. Incredible 48x Total Zoom Range Combining the camera's 12x optical zoom lens with the 4x digital zoom gives photographers a 48x total zoom, perfect for taking distance shots at sporting events or when capturing distant subjects. This incredible optical zoom lens delivers a focal range equivalent to a 35-420mm range on a 35mm camera lens. With the digital zoom, total zoom is equivalent to 35-1680mm (35mm equivalent). Konica Minolta GT APO Lens DiMAGE Z3 focuses in an astonishingly fast 0.15 seconds at wide angle and 0.20 seconds at telephoto for the fastest autofocus in this class. The Dimage Z3 employs a newly developed high-performance lens system that supports CCDs with 5 million effective pixels. The optical lens system consists of 13 elements in 10 groups and includes two AD (anomalous dispersion) glass lenses and two aspheric elements, a construction that adds up to sharp, high-quality images. Multi-coating on 14 lens surfaces ensures minimal flaring and ghosting in all zoom ranges. It employs a 5-vane iris diaphragm to beautifully reproduce a near-circular fading effect. 4-Megapixel CCD for Beautiful Prints The 4-megapixel, 1/2.5-inch CCD produces plenty of detail for creating high-quality enlargements as large as 10 x 14 inches at 150-dpi print resolution. In addition, the CCD's primary color filter offers high color fidelity. Superbly Detailed Images with CxProcess II Konica Minolta's CxProcess II image processing technology incorporates characteristics like smooth gradations, natural skin tones, and brilliantly clear colors for images that are more natural and lifelike. The Dimage Z3's 4 megapixels capture fine lines and intricate details for stunning digital images. High-quality Movies as Beautiful as TV or Video Camera Footage The Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 takes movies in VGA size (640x480) at 30 frames per second for smooth video with sound rivaling TV programs or video camera footage. Users can choose from three movie image sizes: 640x480 (Fine), 640x480 (Standard), or 320x240 (Standard). Thanks to the camera's Anti-Shake function, users can take telephoto movies that are smooth and clear. The XR (Extended Recording) Movie function lets users record longer movie clips onto the camera's SD memory card. With Night Movie, the Dimage Z3 can record in extreme low-light conditions thanks to a CCD that's four times more sensitive than conventional sensors. UHS (Ultra High Speed) Continuous Shooting The Dimage Z3 captures 15 images at 10 frames per second at UHS (Ultra High Speed) continuous shooting. Progressive Capture With the Dimage Z3 in Progressive Capture mode, images are saved automatically when users stop pressing the camera's shutter-release button. Progressive Capture means that the last several images in the sequence get saved: as many as 6 images (in Standard continuous advance) or 15 images (in UHS continuous advance). So when shooting fast-moving subjects, Progressive Capture ensures that they are recorded when and where the user wants them. These functions are handy for shooting sporting events or for recording and improving your form in personal sports training situations such as a golf swing. Real Motion LCD Monitor The Dimage Z3 features the Real Motion LCD monitor, which delivers crystal clear images to the user at 50 frames per second. Conventional monitors on digital cameras use a 30-frames-per-second display format that sometimes results in a less-than-smooth display. The 50-frames-per-second Real Motion monitor rate provides smooth action that brings images to life. Noise Reduction Noise Reduction enables exceptional night images by automatically preventing the blemishes and graininess associated with slow-shutter shots. PASM Exposure Control and Metering Modes The Dimage Z3 offers incredible control over exposure. There are four modes: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual. Select manual exposure to enable 30-second time exposure capability. The Dimage Z3 has three metering modes: Multi-segment, Center-weighted, and Spot. Multi-segment metering uses 256 segments to determine exposure. Get as Near as 0.4 inches with Super Macro Photographers can shoot amazing close-ups in either Macro or Super Macro modes. In Super Macro mode, photographers can bring the lens as near as 0.4 inches from their subject. PictBridge-Compliant Forget all about complicated connections with a PC. Users can get fast, fun printouts directly from their camera by connecting the Dimage Z3 to a PictBridge-compliant printer. Users just check which images they want to print on the Dimage Z3's LCD monitor and then print out their favorites in no time at all. New Ergonomic Design The Dimage Z3's design is advanced yet familiar and easy-to-use. Despite its large 12x zoom range, it weighs just 11.8 ounces. It's also easy to carry and operate even for amateur photographers. The camera's ergonomic form makes it easy to hold and keep steady for those zoom shots. What's in the Box Neck strap NS-DG7000, lens cap LF-243, accessory shoe cap SC-1000, AV cable AVC-700, 16MB SD (Secure Digital) memory card, USB cable USB-2, Dimage Viewer CD-ROM, ArcSoft VideoImpression 2 CD-ROM (for Windows only), four AA alkaline batteries.

Groth Having some experience with SLRs before the digital age, and having used a 2.1 megapixel Canon Ixus 300 for three years, I was ready for an upgrade. At the same time I was pondering whether to buy a digicam that can shoot stills, or a stills camera that can shoot video - thus covering both my needs with a single device. Carrying two devices, two AC adapters/chargers and potentially two different storage media was out of the question, although some manufacturers allow you to use the same storage medium and battery if you buy only their products. I decided for a stills camera, but demanded video capture of 30 frames per second. This requirement excluded almost all the cameras within my price range. Another key consideration was speed. The Ixus is notoriously slow both during startup and shutter lag, too slow for my baby son. Finally I imagined a camera with 5-6 megapixels and a fast lens (ideally f2.0), fairly compact and relatively light weight. Exhausting research showed me that the ideal camera does not exist. However, some cameras do have 30 fps video: SONY W1 or P100, The Panasonic Z10 or Z20, Kyocera M410R, and Konica Minolta Z2. The three latter manufacturers offered large zooms as well. However only Panasonic offered a stabilized zoom, and on the other hand was so big tha I decided against it. All the above cameras offer only middle-of-the-road resolution of 4-5 megapixels. On the other hand, friends with higher resolution cameras tell me that they never use maximum resolution anyway, so I decided I could compromise on the megapixel race and get some other useful features instead. When the Z3 with stabilised zoom was released I took a chance and bought it here at Amazon although none of the established digital photography websites had yet reviewed it. Having used the Z3 for a week and taken about a hundred photos, I am pleased with my decision. The photo quality is as good as I expected, as regards sharpness and colour. The optical 12x zoom is fantastic, and with 4x digital zoom you can shoot the moon and have it fill the entire screen in fairly good resolution. I could read the lisence plates of cars standing 200 yards away. Additionally the camera is fairly compact but has an unusual shape, so get the Konica Minolta case for it. Video is very good, as expected. You get a built-in loudspeaker for instant playback. Besides you need a fast SD card, I got a 512 MB Sandisk Ultra II and am happy with it. An additional plus with SD cards is that they fit into my Palm Tungsten handheld for direct downloading of photos. The instruction manual is good as well, not too big but detailed. Unlike cameras like Olympus C-5060 and C-8080, that have received a lot of praise for their optical qualities but criticism for their complicated menu structure, the Z3 is very straight-forward with just the right repertoire of features. It is really easy to use. When we add quick startup and focusing, I feel most of my requirements are met. I also bought the 2500D external flash with vertically swivelling head, which came at a very competitive price compared to dedicated flashes from other manufacturers. The built-in flash is nevertheless quite strong in most indoor situations. Such features for 499 dollars is a good deal. However Konica Minolta have chosen very cheap solutions to some other needs: - the LCD at the back of the camera is very small, and it does not swivel. All other comparable cameras have larger screens, most of them swivel. If your eyesight is not 100%, get a different camera. - the built-in flash does not pop up when needed, you have to push it up with your hand. - The lens itself is not threaded, only the barrel around it. You have to buy a big adapter in order to attach the most basic UV filter. The camera will also not fit into the case with the adapter on. - low light metering is poor, often impossible. A focus

Panasonic VDR-D300 3.1MP 3CCD DVD Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

The Panasonic VDR-D300 DVD Camcorder makes recording and sharing life's precious moments simple. By recording directly to a blank DVD, you'll preserve the sharpness and color of the special events in your life, as beautifully as you remember them. The Leica lenses don't miss a detail and neither will you, with the 10x optical and 700x digital zoom. Preview your footage through the 2.7" LCD screen, then transfer images to a PC or digital camera through a USB port or SD slot. Your new DVDs will work in almost any DVD-RAM, DVD-R or DVD-RW player, so you can share those great moments as soon as they're recorded. 700x Digital Zoom Optical Image Stabilization DVD-RAM/ -R / -RW Recording SD Card Slot Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Video Out Compact, slim design Includes software Dimensions(WxHxD) - 3.426 x 2.481 x 5.434 Weight - 1.43 lbs.

Amazon Sales Rank: #9928 in Camera & Photo Brand: Panasonic Model: VDR-D300 Released on: 2009-11-30 Dimensions: 1.29 pounds Display size: 2.7 3CCD imager for vivid color, fine detail, and rich gradation Records and plays DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs 3.1-megapixel still picture recording captures up to 2,048 x 1,512 images 10x optical zoom with Leica Dicomar lens; 2.7-inch wide 16:9 LCD Powered by lithium ion battery; USB 2.0 hi-speed connection

Manufacturer Description The Panasonic VDR-D300 DVD Palmcorder Camcorder with 3CCD Camera System and Optical Image Stabilizer is compatible with either DVD-RAM or DVD-R, giving you multiple recording and playback options. DVD-R discs are tough and versatile, and can be played back on most home DVD players. However, DVD-RAM discs allow you to record and erase, just like videotapes. DVD-RAM discs can be played back in compatible devices, like DVD players and computers. Since DVD Camcorders use a "non-contact" method to record and play, repeated playback doesn't affect the image quality like it can with videotape. Your favorite videos and images can be kept for years without any loss of quality. Plus, DVD-RAM discs can be rewritten approximately 100,000 times, making them an economical and ideal choice for repeated recording. Superior color, detail and gradation: 3CCD camera system Most professional broadcasting cameras use the 3CCD system. In a 1CCD system, all of the incoming light information is processed by the same CCD. The more advanced 3CCD system uses three distinct CCDs for processing, so there is absolutely no light loss. You can see the results in beautifully rendered images with vivid color, fine detail, and rich gradation. Optical image stabilizer (O.I.S.) Panasonic's O.I.S. minimizes the hand-shake that can be such a problem with handheld shots. Because Panasonic's system is optical, there is no image quality degradation. When you're shooting a still picture, the MEGA O.I.S. system automatically activates, doubling the corrective power. With O.I.S. and MEGA O.I.S., the camcorder is equipped for clear, beautiful shooting of both motion and still pictures. Leica Dicomar lens Leica AG of Germany is the manufacturer of fine cameras and lenses favored by photographers everywhere. The Leica Dicomar lens featured in the camcorder was developed specifically for digital video cameras. Drawing on Leica's renowned optical technology, this advanced lens captures clear, crisp, finely nuanced images with outstanding detail and contrast. Special high-performance imaging engine: Crystal engine The Crystal Engine is a special image processing circuit for 3CCD camera systems. It processes the R, G and B signals from the three CCDs individually, so it gives both motion and still pictures exceptional quality. High-quality MPEG2 engine Panasonic's MPEG2 engine is a wide-range, high-precision search engine that produces smooth, beautiful motion pictures. Because it precisely records the differences in each frame, it can render fast, complex motions - like those of athletes in the thick of the action - with exceptional precision. The MPEG2 engine also uses Variable Bit Rate technology that Panasonic developed for the high-end DIGA DVD recorder. Giving LP recordings nearly twice the resolution captured with previous Panasonic video cameras, this lets the camcorder record clear, smoothly flowing pictures. 3.1-megapixel still pictures recording Both motion and still pictures are superb. Photos are so vivid and real, you can enjoy them as high-quality prints or as breathtaking images on a large-screen TV. 10x optical zoom Distant subjects can be enlarged so they appear to be right up close. This allows dynamic shots of both motion and still pictures. High-picture quality wide mode (16:9) and 2.7-inch LCD This model offers the High-Picture-Quality Wide Mode, which produces images that make for beautiful, dramatic viewing on a wide-screen TV. The image is processed on 16:9 area of the CCD. Because the image decoded has the same proportions as your wide-screen TV, there is virtually no picture quality degradation. You get beautiful images and all the excitement and dynamism on either a wide 16:9 screen TV or a conventional 4:3 TV. This model also features a wide 2.7-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16:9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide. Choose the media you want with multi-format ease: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R DVD camcorder models can record and play DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs. With the DVD-RAM disc, you can record again and again on the same disc, up to tens of thousand times, and view it without any finalizing process. You can record repeatedly on DVD-RW discs as well, and they are well suited to editing. While you can record only once on DVD-R discs, they can be played back on almost any kind of DVD player or recorder. With DVD camcorder's wide compatibility, you can record on whichever kind of disc works best in your DVD player or recorder. Select the recording mode to match your needs: XP, SP, LP mode This unit records in VBR. VBR is an abbreviation for Variable Bit Rate. VBR recording automatically varies the bit rate (amount of data in a fixed time) depending on the subject being recorded. This means if a subject with sharp movements is recorded, the recording time is reduced. One-touch navigation & joystick control The joystick makes the camera much easier to use, letting you control all basic operations with one hand. As you shoot, just watch the image in the monitor and follow the instruction guide. You can handle a number of operations quickly and easily, without even taking your eye off the subject. Help mode Not sure what a certain icon meansJust switch on the Help mode and select the icon. It's explained for you on the LCD monitor. This makes it easier to learn the icons, and you spend less time reading the operating manual. Quick search & access with Disc Navigator Unlike videotape, you don't need to rewind or fast-forward a DVD disc to search for specific scenes. The video camera LCD screen displays a list of the recorded scenes for quick and easy searching. Edit with Disc Navigator You can do some polished editing using just the camera itself. For example, you can delete scenes right on the spot or change the scene sequence to create your own scenarios. Playlist Edit It's easy to change the sequence of the scenes you've recorded, and then play them back. (You can record up to 99 sequencing patterns on each side of the disc for easy playback.) Playlist editing and playback can be done only with scenes on the same side of the disc. Easy Deleting This function makes it easy to delete the scenes you don't want and to save the ones you do. You can also split up motion pictures and delete only parts of them. Easy on/off When you open the LCD, the power switches on. Shut it and the power goes off. Pull out the viewfinder and the power switches on. Store it and the power goes off. Easy On/Off reduces the time required for operating the camera. Anti-ground shooting The O.I.S. linear motor system can detect when the camera is in an unusual shooting position - such as when you've inadvertently left it on in recording mode. In these cases, the camera automatically stops recording, saving both battery power and disc space. Set to OFF when shipped from the factory. To turn Anti Ground Shooting ON, the setting must be made on the menu screen. 0 Lux Color Night View with Light Panel for shooting in total darkness. Designed for shooting in total darkness, this function shoots four frames per second using the LCD monitor as a light source. Pictures are clear and sharp thanks to the hand-shake compensation provided by the O.I.S. Light from the LCD is gentle and easy on the eyes, so you can snap shots of sleeping children without waking them up. Color Night View for shooting in dim light. Color Night View gives you smoothly flowing pictures even in dark places, where it's normally difficult to capture good shots. No more lost lens caps When the power is turned on, the lens cover automatically opens. When the power goes off, the lens cover closes. You don't have to keep removing and replacing a lens cap - or worry about losing it. No cables to connect The DVD camcorder gives you cable-free, connection-free playback. Just slip the disc into your DVD player and let the show begin. finalizing is required before playback when you record in video mode. Please note that, depending on the format, some DVD discs cannot be played on some DVD players or recorders. High-speed transfer to Panasonic Diga With DVD's high-speed data transfer, you can dub your recordings -- even large volumes -- quickly and easily onto a DVD video recorder's hard disk drive. Enjoy sophisticated editing with the DVD recorder, or save your recordings onto DVD and create a collection of your own DVDs. High-speed data transfer to PC USB 2.0 compatibility lets you upload a motion picture data to a PC at high speed over a single USB cable. Even if your PC has no DVD drive, you can transfer the data to a PC easily. DVD-Movie AlbumSE 4.2 and DVDfunStudio 2.4 With DVD-MovieAlbumSE 4.2 software, which makes it easy to add titles and texts, you can create your own polished, professional-looking movies. Outstanding consumer camcorder with superb image quality By Gadgester The Panasonic VDR-D300 "Palmcorder" is a compact 3CCD camcorder that records videos to mini DVDs: 3" (8 cm) DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R. (Note that it cannot use the "plus" version of DVD+R/RW.) Thanks to the three separate 1/6" CCD image sensors inside, it shoots broadcast-quality videos and turns in decent low-light performance. It also doubles as a 3.1MP digital camera, but its forte definitely lies in shooting video. 5/4/06 UPDATE: before going any further, let me offer a bit of a "warning." The fundamental differences between DVD camcorders and tape (miniDV) camcorders are two: 1) DVDs let you access a scene quickly and easily, while tapes have much faster start-up times (assuming you are already at the point where you can record or play); 2)DVD camcorders like the VDR-D300 use MPEG4 compression whereas miniDV camcorders compress much less. For most scenes you won't notice a difference. In fact you can probably shoot a good professional-looking movie on the VDR-D300. Just be aware that the MPEG4 can very occasionally raises the ugly head of heavy compression for certain shooting conditions. The "warning" concerns the DVD media: if you use DVD-RW, which is more common and cheaper than Panasonic's DVD-RAM, be prepared for up to 5 minutes of formatting time and up to 10 minutes in finalization time (both have to be done with the AC adapter attached, not from battery). In a nutshell, if you plan to do some editing, use DVD-RAM. If you plan to just shoot and watch (like me), use DVD-R or DVD-RW in Video mode (both require finalization but can be played back on almost all DVD players). I just wanted to point out the long formatting and finalization times as the biggest caveat with DVD camcorders, including the DVR-D300. Update2: if you buy this between now and 7/31, you can get a free camcorder bag and 3 DVD-R blanks from Panasonic by mail. Check their website for the PDF rebate form. Before offering my take on the VDR-D300, let me tell you why I chose it. My story might be of some help in your own decision making. First, I had always wanted a 3CCD camcorder of my own. Most consumer camcorders on the market have one image sensor inside. The image sensor is like the eye of the camcorder. The VDR-D300 has not one, but three CCD image sensors, each designed to process a specific color: red, green or blue. In fact, all professional video camcorders -- like the ones used to shoot things on TV (news, dramas, etc.) -- use the 3CCD design to better capture color. Together with proper white-balance calibration and judicious choice of lens, you get eye-pleasing colors and sharpness not found in most consumer camcorders, which tend to give dull, bland, fuzzy video images. Second, I was a little fed up with using tapes for video recording. You know the drill: you buy a tape-based camcorder, then you find out it's a pain to dub it to a VHS or a DVD, or to transfer it to a computer, so you end up using the camcorder like one or two times a year. Like many folks I have been using the video function of my digital camera a lot and left my Sony DCR-PC5 camcorder behind in the closet. My Fujifilm F10 digital camera shoots pretty good video for a camera, but for important occasions, I still want a real camcorder. (Cameras are designed for still images whereas camcorders are designed for moving pictures. For now and the foreseeable future, there's no perfect hybrid camera that does both very well.) DVD-recording has always appealed to me because I could just pop in a recordable/rewritable DVD, shoot some footage, and then play it back, without all the fussing involved with tape recording. I played with my friends' DVD camcorders (Panasonic and Sony) and really liked this "new" way of shooting videos. I waited until someone released a camcorder that combined DVD recording and the 3-chip design.

Decent camcorder with a few cons By Lei Xie The camcorder offers outstanding video quality (at its price level)in adequate lighting condition. I had a chance to compare it to Cannon Opture 500. I think GS150 produces better color than Opeture does, due largely to 3ccd, but makes slightly more noise in low light settings. I like the joystick, which makes the control panel look clean and simple. However, there are a few things I am not happy with. 1. Generally, EIS does not improve much from GS120. Without a tripod, you still need to hold your breath if you want to get really stable video. 2. There is no EIS in widescreen mode. 3. Again, low light performance is not satisfactory. So, if you do most of your shooting outdoor and are confident on your "stability skills," this is a great camcorder to buy. 76 of 78 people found the following review helpful. Pretty decent camera for the price By Prashanth Krishnappa I have had this camera for about 3 weeks. Bought this after lot of research(mini-dvd versus miniDV). Read some horror stories about an entire disk getting wiped out with mini-dvd camcorders. GS150 does an amazing job in bright day light. Colors are vibrant compared to 1 CCD cameras. Low light performance is so so. Overall, I am a satisfied customer. If you plan on transferring video to a computer, get a fire-wire cable. This camera needs a 4 pin male connector. I have a MAC and transferring video and burning into a DVD was a breeze. 39 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Best Camera for the Price By Shawn P. Mitchell I love this camera. The odd thing is that I did not think I would. When I started the research for buying a camcorder I reallt wanted a Sony. I work as a film editor and have used many professional Sony products and have for years. I've found that with Sony you generally get what you pay for. However when researching I could not bring myself to pay more for a one chip Sony camcorder than I would for a three-chip Panasonic. I'm very glad I went with the Panasonic, the image quality is faantastic, and the controls could not be easier to use. Plus this camera had alot of nice professional features that I could not find together on other consumer camcorders. The image stabilization is great, the ability to manually control focus and white balance and the inclusion of a 2.3 megapixel still camera were nice additions. Also if you're editing at home the ability to use this camera as a DV/Analog converter to power an external monitor with your editing system was a nice bonus. Overall most of the features on this camera can be found individually on other cameras, but this was one of the few I found that had all of the nice bonuses together. Still the main reason to purchase was what caught my attention at first -- ths is the cheapest 3-CCD camera I could find. See all 32 customer reviews...

Pawlowski I gave it 5 stars not because it's a great camera, but because it's great & handy for the price. My new pocket Digital video camera (DVD quality) I just got for Father's day (a week early) I take everywhere. The camera has headphone jacks & a built in speaker. It doubles as an mp3 player & is a great little still camera too. It can also play the role as an external disk drive to hold or transfer any type of files. The camera is about the size of a pack of U.S. cigarettes which easily fits in any pocket. It encodes video into MPEG4 compression format, the same format used in HDTV broadcasts. So with a 512MB card (not included) if I don't have any stills or music loaded in it, I get 90 minutes of DVD quality recording time on it. The catch is it's only 10fps at DVD resolution. But still looks very good. It has several lower resolutions too, including VHS resolution at 30fps for smoother motion. But at that resolution it still looks better than standard VHS tape. No tape noise, grain, jitter, saturation, sync or color dot problems. It has no moving parts except for the buttons & the swing out screen. Everything is recorded digitally onto a memory chip. Of course most computers are much higher resolution than most TVs. So the slightest flaws or artifacts will be more noticable on the computer than on most TVs. Burn them onto VCD, SVCD, or DVD to play them on your TV. If your graphics card has s-video output or better, just plug that into your TV. On the lowest video resolution, also 30fps, it looks like those small low bandwidth online streaming videos you can watch on the net, not good at all but usable. If you're planning on sending video on limited bandwidth or file sizes the lowest resolution will be handy. On that low a setting it'll record for hours or until the batteries die, making it great as a hidden spycam or nanny cam. It also is a net cam too. It takes only 2 AA batteries so you won't have to keep running to the charger with expensive short-lived battery packs. I'm using Sony 2600mha newer rechargables I already owned. They lasted till the memory was full with a readout of 80% of battery life still left. So I have no experience on how long ordinary cheap AA batteries would last. The specs say 60 minutes with ordinary AA alkalines. I threw in a pair of 2000mah rechargables I got cheap in a 20 pack from Amazon. It recorded 90 minutes of video with plenty of power left over. When plugged into the USB port, it'll use the USB power, not the batteries, averaging a current draw of about 300ma. The included video editing software is better than software that I already had that cost almost as much as the camera... & it's easier to use. It will work for editing any video, not just the ones made by the camera. The camera & software are specifically designed for XP. But because without the software, if you plug it into the USB port, any computer will recognize it as an external drive. You can tranfer your files off or onto the camera as easy as you can move files from 1 disk, folder, or drive to another. Doing it that way, without the included software you can watch or burn your videos & pix on any computer, even a mac or linux machine. I tried it, it does work. Your computer will need an MPEG4 player to play the video. It will list video as AVI files, but if you ever had MPEG4 files before, it usually lists them as AVIs. If you have the memory card, the computer will recognize it as 2 drives, the card & the internal memory. Oh, it also includes jacks to plug it in to your TV, VCR, external burner, or stereo, & play your images, movies, or music without a computer. Digital cameras need a lot more light than their analog tape or film sisters... this one too. It has a flash for still pictures, which works well, but no built in light for video. For indoors video you'll need all your ordinary house lights turned on

Megapixel Performance With the ZR850 you get a 1.07 megapixel CCD image sensor. Your video will be sharper, clearer and more true to life, as will your photos. Every sunset on the beach will be more dramatic with every color in the sky faithfully captured. The joy on the face of a child scoring her first goal on the soccer field is recorded just as you saw it. Widescreen HR Recording You want your memories to last forever -- that's why you've taken the time to capture them. And you want to shoot in widescreen format to get everything you can out of your new widescreen TV or home theater system. So, why is the way you record widescreen images so important? Because you want an image made for widescreen, not adapted for widescreen. Because every HD television is widescreen -- widescreen is the future. Canon camcorders use the entire width of the image sensor to capture video in true 16:9 format. What difference does this make? It's simple. With more pixels captured, you get better image quality. Some competitors' camcorders force the wider picture into a smaller space on the sensor -- giving you a less true image, with fewer pixels and lower quality. In addition, the viewfinder on your ZR850 displays your widescreen image in a letterbox view. From side to side and top to bottom, what you see is what you get. You can also view your widescreen shot in the ZR850's large, 2.7-inch LCD screen or its .35-inch color viewfinder. Either way, there isn't the guessing or extra work in looking at an image that's distorted like a fun house mirror. To make things even easier, a Widescreen Button lets you switch from standard 4:3 to 16:9 Widescreen HR at the touch of your finger. You can also use the widescreen feature with the camcorder's advanced image stabilization. Every one of the camcorders in Canon's new ZR series gives you Widescreen HR Recording at a very affordable price. Why shouldn't your camcorder shoot as wide as your widescreen TV? It should -- and it's hard to match the widescreen video, or the value, you'll get from your Canon ZR. Easy Operation The new ZR850 comes with a variety of features that make it an easy-to-operate camcorder. The Joystick makes using the camcorder easier than ever. Extra buttons have been eliminated, allowing you to access many functions from one convenient place. The Joystick lets you control Play, Stop, Fast Forward, and Rewind functions during playback. It also controls exposure lock and exposure compensation during recording. With Quick Start, you'll never miss a shot again. Simply push the Quick Start button, in between shots, to put your camcorder in stand-by mode. Push the Quick Start button again, and your camcorder powers up and begins to record in less than a second. When using Quick Start, you are considerably extending the life of your battery compared to that of regular recording mode. Also, an easy-to-read menu system makes the ZR850 a breeze to operate. For the ultimate in stress-free shooting, there's the Easy Mode. In this setting, your ZR850 will automatically choose the focus, exposure and any additional available parameters to ensure that whatever you're recording comes out looking great. You don't have to worry about a thing -- just point and shoot! Plus, this versatile camcorder is designed for lower battery consumption -- so you can keep on recording. Perfect Exposures The new ZR850 gives you exposure controls found on expensive digital still cameras. Omni-selector joystick Exposure Lock With a push of its convenient omni-selector joystick, the ZR850 lets you lock your exposure settings, and then recompose your shot. For example, you can lock your exposure while zoomed in on your subject's face. Then, even if you zoom out to include a very bright or dark background, your ZR850 will still give your subject the right exposure. Also, by shifting the omni-selector left or right, you can adjust your exposure by up to +/-11 stops (+/-2.75 EV). Auto Slow Shutter Function The Auto Slow Shutter function ensures perfect exposures in low light by lowering your shutter speed. Program AE Mode The ZR850 comes with Program AE Mode settings that give you perfect exposures in a variety of conditions: snow, beach, sunset, spotlight, fireworks, portrait, sports and night. Stunning Digital Photography When you've got your ZR850 with you, you can leave your digital still camera at home. That's because with Canon's DoubleShot technology, you don't just get video and photography -- you get the best of both. At the heart of the ZR850's performance as a digital still camera is Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing circuit. Because video and still images have different color requirements, DIGIC DV processes the two differently. So, along with stunning video images, you also get digital photos from your ZR850 that are maximized for viewing on computer monitors and as prints. The ZR850 also comes with an array of features that add to its performance as a digital still camera. 9 Point Ai-AF A feature found on more expensive camcorders, Auto Intelligent Auto Focus ensures sharp images and gives creative flexibility. Even when your subject isn't in the center of the frame, the ZR850's 9 Point AiAF will bring it into sharp focus. Progressive Photo Canon's Progressive Photo gives you sharper detail in your digital photography. Scene Modes Special Scene Modes ensure accurate exposures under a wide variety of difficult lighting conditions. Modes include: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight, or Fireworks. For example, choose Spotlight and your camcorder exposes for the subject in the center of your frame. This is perfect for recording your child's moment in the spotlight on stage. Or, pick Night to capture the magic of a cityscape after the sun goes down. Image Effects Four different image settings are available depending on your subject: Vivid, Neutral, Low-Sharpening, and Skin Detail. Simultaneous Photo Recording Simultaneous Photo Recording lets you capture a digital photograph while recording video. Share Your Videos The ZR850 comes with an array of features that make it easy to share your videos: Firewire/IEEE1394 DV Terminal Transfer your video to your computer and you can easily share your captured memories with friends and family. With the ZR850, it's simple. Just connect your computer to your camcorder's IEEE1394 DV terminal with a DV cable. Also known as Firewire or iLink, this high-speed interface lets you download your precious video footage with virtually no loss of video or audio quality. Your favorite recorded moments retain their pristine image and sound for everyone to enjoy. Motion JPEG Mode With the ZR850's Motion JPEG Mode, you can also record movie clips directly to your camcorder's memory card for posting online or e-mailing to family and friends. Share Your Photos The ZR850 give you a variety of ways to share your photos with friends and family. It's easy to share digital photos via email because you can easily transfer images directly to your PC using the USB terminal. You can also print directly from your camcorder to any PictBridge-compatible printer, or store your digital photos on a Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card or a MultiMediaCard. Plus, these new ZRs are SD HC compatible, which allows you to use cards with a capacity of 2GB or larger. That means you can store even more digital photos than before. Additional Features Built-in Manual Lens Cover means you never have to go looking for your lens cover again. Plus, you don't have the bother of your lens cap dangling from your camcorder. Remote Control lets you be operate your ZR850 remotely -- so you can be in the picture with everyone else. 1 Year Parts And Labor Limited Warranty provides protection long after other manufacturers' warranties expire. I was prepared to spend a fair amount of money on a better model, but I came to the conclusion that it was a better idea to spend less money and wait a couple of years for the HD technology to come down in price and the hard drive storage format to become more established. So this was, in my opinion, the best mixture of quality and price. There are certainly cheaper models out there but beware. There are three major bugaboos camcorders have to face: internal noise, image stabalization, and low lighting conditions. You can expect cheaper machines not to excell in these and to pay dearly for those that do. Canon's real selling point is its optics, but like most lower-end models, they don't "shine" in low light. They put external mike jacks only on their chapest models so they can sell to schools (the education market likes low prices and external mikes). Personally, I have a pocket digital recorder with a lavalier mike and I edit in a separate digital soundtrack to get around the noise problem, but not everyone wants to do that. Canon's image stabalization seems improved from the previous model that I've had, although while 35X zoom seems impressive, I've not yet tested it to see what the vibration reduction is like at the etxreme end. My biggest problem is the low lighting, so I bought a portable utility light at a home improvement store for ten bucks to help with that. The reality is that even though you don't care to spend a couple hundred bucks every year on new ccamcorders, you should consider this a disposable camera. It costs almost as much to buy a new model as to fix them. I bought this to replace a ZR85. Which leads me to another point- if you have the option, you might consider an extended warantee. The earlier generations of camcorders seem to have had a habit of blowing out. You will want to buy an extended life battery as well- the battery that this model came with was good for only a short while. I wouldn't bother much with still photography- camcorders don't have great snapshot capabilities just as camera's don't generally have good video capabilities. It's tempting to try to kill two birds with one stone, but none of the models I've seen do both eaqually well. Even my cheapo point and shoot digital camera takes better pictures (but not nearly as good video). Also, copying video to the SDram card is a quick and easy way to slap a short video clip on your website or email it to friends, but you will get a compressed file with significantly poorer quality than the miniDV tape. On a PC you can use Windows Movie Maker (free download if you don't already have it) but it only saves in WMV format. To burn in DVD format you will need authoring software (that's another review, but I use Adobe premiere elements). MiniDV is on its way out, but will probably still be around for a while. It has great quality- much better than a DVD, although you can certainly create DVDs from a miniDV tape. As far as storage goes, the tapes are pretty cheap- 13 gigs or so for a couple of bucks is pretty good. In the future though I think the hard drives are going to be the next big thing. Copying your tapes to a DVD via a Mac is a breeze with imovie and iDVD (no, I don't work for Mac) although I generally do my editing on a PC. It is a bit of a pain (less so when you finally get the hang of it) but I don't have regular access to a Mac. This is a really great starter camera if you are just getting into digital video and a real easy, convient, point and shoot workhorse. That being said, it is sophistocated enough that you can grow into it. My guess is that by the time you grow out of it the prices for more advanced technology will have come down and this camera will have reached the end of its lifespan anyway. I found mine brand new online for 260 bucks, and I got what

The HR10 features the latest HD technology, excellence in Canon optics and engineering in a compact, sleek design to deliver the high level of performance you’ve come to expect from Canon. HR10 Highlights Canon Full HD CMOS sensor (1920x1080) The HR10 features a Canon manufactured HD CMOS Image sensor. Similar to its use in Canon’s EOS Series digital SLR cameras, the CMOS sensor reproduces high resolution images as true HD movies. Canon’s HD CMOS sensor acquires image information at 1920x1080 pixels. Canon’s HD CMOS sensor also features onchip noise reduction technology. This low noise technology feature means that even in dimly-lit scenes, the signals from each pixel are as pure as possible, with minimal "noise" or other aberrations. RGB Primary Color Filter Whether you’re shooting video or photos, you will appreciate the HR10‘s stunning, high-definition image production. For rich, accurate color, the HR10 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter. It separates light into red, green, and blue color components, resulting in vibrant images with natural-looking tones similar to what you’d obtain from 3CCD camcorders. Genuine Canon Optics With more than 70 years of expertise in manufacturing lenses for professional broadcast and photography, the Canon names represents optical excellence. That's why Canon's expertise in designing lenses for photography and broadcast television goes into every camcorder lens we make. 10x high-definition video lens The HR10 comes equipped with a 10X HD Video lens. An aspherical lens is used to help achieve low aberration and high resolution. The HR10 lens also features super spectra coating technology which lowers flare and ghosting. A gradation ND system is used for better exposure in bright shooting situations. This lens design creates true HD image quality. DIGIC DV II image processor DIGIC DV II is the next generation of Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing technology designed specifically for HD. Since video and still images have different color requirements, DIGIC DV II HD digital signal processing ensures optimal image quality for both HD video and still images. Thanks to DIGIC DV II image processing, the HR10 produces video with improved color reproduction -- especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction -- for images that are crystal clear. SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer The HR10 features Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Utilizing a Hybrid detection method (combining vector and gyro detection method) corrects camera shake instantly for steady shots. And unlike other optical stabilization systems, Canon’s Super Range OIS covers a wide range of movements while preserving image quality. It is even effective while taking photos. 24p Cinema Mode 24p Cinema Mode is a feature demanded by professional filmmakers and previously, only available on pro-level camcorders. 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring movie makers achieve a professional "film-look." This mode is actually two different features, which can be used independently, or together, depending on the user’s preference. The frame rate changed to 24p -- the same frame rate as movie film The HR10 changes the color and tonal characteristics to make you feel like you are watching a movie in the theatre. 2.7-inch widescreen multi-angle Vivid LCD The HR10 is equipped with a multi-angle Vivid LCD. This newly designed screen offers two key advantages for easy, flexible operation. A wide viewing angle -- view from any direction A wide color range -- provides robust, accurate color Instant AF (Auto Focus) Instant AF is Canon’s new and advanced autofocus system. Using a Hybrid Control system, the Instant AF makes it easy to focus on previously difficult subjects. It dramatically decreases the time it takes to achieve proper focus and increases accuracy especially in low-light and high-brightness situations. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminal The HDMI terminal transports high definition video signal with audio in one cable to your HD Television. The new standard in HD connection. Built-in electronic lens cover A built-in electronic lens cover automatically opens when the camcorder is turned on and closes when turned off. There is no dangling lens cover to lose. Program AE mode The HR10 gives you a choice of settings that automatically result in the best exposure for different conditions. Scene modes include: Portrait, Sports, Night, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Spotlight, and Fireworks. Each adjusts your camcorder's settings to compensate for different lighting conditions and different subjects. Simultaneous photo shooting While shooting an HD movie, you can simultaneously capture a 2-megapixel photo to a memory card by simply pressing the photo button. It’s perfect for anytime you don’t want to miss a moment. Built-in Ultra Video light Increase your low-light capabilities even further by shooting with the HR10. With one push of the Focus Assist Button (during manual focus setting), video zoom and peaking (for emphasizing image contours) are displayed. Not to worry, this is automatically cancelled when recording is started. Level and grid markers It's easy to keep your HR10 level for more professional looking video. Also, the Grid marker is very convenient for setting up the special balance in your shots. Since background colors vary, you can select from two line colors to make the lines easily visible. Built-in flash Capture superb images in low light and indoor photography settings. Histogram Display Commonly used in Canon’s line of digital SLR cameras, the HR10 features a Histogram Display. With just one push of a button, the brightness information of a still image is revealed. This allows you to monitor image quality so you can make adjustments to improve the next shots. Print/Share button For fast and easy, one-touch printing of your photos at home, simply press the camcorder’s Print & Share Button. The button can also be used for one-touch downloading of your images to a computer.

There have been many events captured in HD - recitals, ball games, birthdays, etc. I have been able to use cheap DVD's (available here at Amazon). It records in HD. Recorded media (8cm. DVD-R's) is encoded in AVCHD and can be played directly using a bluray player. -ep 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly good but a bit outdated. By Keith Dickens Actually, it probably is outdated. The DVD format is not the most efficient way to go. But the quality of the shots I've gotten with this camera are awesome for the price I paid. I'm willing at this point to get the quality and do a little extra work in the post-production phase to convert the video. It took a bit a bit to figure out the best way to get the video, in either SD or HD format off the disks and onto our editing machine. We used Any Video Converter (Free) to convert the files to a more editable format. The quality of the camera when used with proper lighting is amazing for a single CMOS camera. It does have issues with poor lighting. It will become grainy, especially when working under red lights (like what we had in our haunted house). The limited time that can be captured (especially under HD) per disk can be a problem if you just want to shoot all day long and not worry about changing disks. If you want to make webisodes/independent movies its not really that big of a problem if you manage disk space adequately and use DL disks. There are also plenty of 37mm lenses that can screw onto the front of this thing but once it is attached BE CAREFUL. Its not a solid mounting system like you'd get with a prosumer/professional camera and I could image a good wack on the lens breaking the camera threads, lens and camera housing quite easily. The two biggest things that I don't like are the lack of any support on Canon's website. I would have liked to have seen a firmware update available by now that would make increase the battery life, add additional presets, or improve focus detection. Not that any of those things are terrible now, but firmware updates can always make those things better. The other problem that I have with the camera is that to capture pictures you'll need to buy a miniSD card. Not SD, SDHC, or even microSD...but miniSD. A dead format for cards. So if you buy this camera don't think that the plethora of SD cards you have laying around will cover you. You'll need to buy a miniSD card or two from Amazon at the same time. 9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Nice product By M. Kurapati I got this at a cheaper price, but the quality is worth the price. It has features, that most other camcoders doesn't have. It uses a codec format, that stores HD media on non-HD media (like DVDs). Very Nice. See all 6 customer reviews...

Excellant Low Light Camcorder By Jeffrey Wortner I bought this camera last night and am so impressed with it I wanted to post an initial review ASAP since the camera is so new and there are so few reviews out there for it. To begin, I am new into the HD video, but am a techie and have done a lot of research. My primary objective was to get a camera that took good low light video, so video in my living room with the kids with normal evening lighting looked good. Also important to me was ease of use so my wife can easily grab it and catch the kids and also a small size for ease of carrying to Disney and such. After doing a lot of research, I initially bought the Panasonic HDC-HS250. One of the popular camcoder web sites claim the new Panasonic cameras with 3 sensors to be the best low light cameras. Well, I had nothing to compare it against, but I was VERY disappointed in the video taken in my living room with normal incandesant lighting with this Panasonic. I spent about 1 week learning all the camera settings, and no mode or setting improved the low light video. It was fuzzy and grainy with washed out color. Based on the reviews of this CAM being so good at low light, I was beginning to wonder if I just had my expectations to high for this technology, and this was about as good as you get in this range of camera. I was also not real happy with the outdoor video. While it was mostly good, the greens were far to vivid/bright, and just did not look natural. I was about ready to settle for this camera, and then this past Sunday I had family in town. After dinner I took a lot of video in the living room of the family. Apon playing it back I was just disgusted in the quality. I then saw the Sunday add for Best Buy which had this new Sony camera which claimed 2X better low light. I searched the internet for reviews, only finding initial reviews with no actual tests since the camera was so new. I decided to buy the Sony and compare it to the Panasonic. I got the camera home last night and was happy to learn that the charger plugs directly into the camera without removing the battery, so I was able to use the camera immediately (The Panasonic has a goofy system where you have to remove the battery and place in a separate charger, and then you can EITHER charge the battery OR run the camera, not both.). It still wasn't dark but I took some video and pictures and toyed around with the menu system (I am a man so of course I didn't read the manual!). I found the menu system easy to navigate, with nothing terribly hidden or buried in layers to access. There are some features that I found I will need to read up on, and the MY CAMERA feature very confusing, but I suspect will be very useful after I read up on it and learn how to use it. I hooked the camera to the HDMI of my 720P TV and was just FLOORED with the quality of the images and video! This is the feeling I hoped to have when I first watched the video from the Panasonic that I never had. OK, so it is around 7pm, still light out but no direct sun in the house. I have big windows so this presents a tricky backlighting issue for most cameras. The video and picture from this Sony were just a true as life. The camera handled the tricky lighting automatically with no manual backlighting adjustments. I couldn't wait for dark to test the low light but I was really confident that I had a winner here. While waiting for dark I test the still pics in both video mode and normal camera mode. The pics were FAR superior to the other camera. I just bought a Nikon D5000 SLR, so I have pretty high standards for my pics now, and this camera takes very good pics in either mode. I am not sure if it has a faster shutter mode (probably is) because the pics were a little subject to blurring from movement, but over all they were as good or better then my old Cannon S45 5 MP camera that took some darn good pics. So now we come

Sony HDR-XR550V 240GB High Definition HDD Handycam Camcorder

Capture stunning 1920 x 1080 high-definition video and 12 Megapixel still images with the HDR-XR550V, which employs an "Exmor R" CMOS sensor for superior low-light performance and a 240GB internal hard disk drive. I owned the HDR-XR500V which I absolutely loved. In addition to all the great features on the HDR-XR500V, the HDR-XR550V includes an electronic viewfinder and also provides manual shutter speed control. It also offers a non-native 60p output option and in-camera standard definition downconversion. The latter is an especially welcome addition, giving users the ability to record and archive their footage in the highest quality, then export and edit with the smaller, more manageable MPEG-2 files. Perhaps the most exciting new feature on the HDR-XR550V is the new memory card slot: a single slot that is compatible with both Memory Stick PRO Duo cards and traditional SD/SDHC cards. This new slot will be featured on Sony's entire Handycam lineup this year, giving users unprecedented flexibility in sticking with Sony's proprietary memory format or opting for the more univeral SD/SDHC cards. I personally love the GPS tagging feature, although I wish it would offer more detailed maps. The HDR-XR550V has increased hard drive capacity to 240GB, which gives me plenty of recording time. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Great camera for the price, hard drive is awesome By W. Savoy I bought this camera to accompany my other Sony Z1U which shoots HD on HDV tapes using the HDV compression. This camera records the newer AVCHD compression onto a 240 GB hard drive, which is absolutely awesome. Even at the highest quality setting, I could record over 1900 minutes before having to delete anything. And when you're ready to capture, simply hook it up with USB, and your computer recognizes it as a disc. To edit the footage, you will need to convert the footage into Apple ProRes or Apple Intermediate Codec (if using a Mac, of course). Macintosh can not, at the time of writing this, edit the AVCHD footage NATIVELY (i.e. without converting it). I hear the new Final Cut 8 which is coming out soon should be able to do it. For the Windows users, I have a friend who edits ACVHD using a Pinnacle System and he doesn't need to convert. The quality is GREAT- actually is sharper and looks better than my Sony Z1U, which cost $5000 when I bought it 4 years ago. Go figure. I definitely recommend this camera. I bought it to experiment with the new codec and planned to return it, now I think I'm going to keep it as a second cam. I love not having to record to tape all the time. It's so easy to capture! The HD video quality (I only use the FX 24 Mbps mode) is stunning. I sometimes think the video is even more realistic looking than the actual scene being shot. I have added a Rode Stereo Video Mic and Vortex Warm Cards to good effect. I would like to have more independent manual control over focusing, exposure, white balance, etc. It is possible to manually adjust these settings but there is only a small multipurpose rotary knob for this purpose. Also, you can't simultaneously adjust both aperture and shutter speed. A larger lens would be nice, native progressive mode framing, and XLR microphone inputs. In order to get these features, you would have to spend a few thousand dollars more. I do have a quibble about the "12 Megapixel" still photos this camera is supposed to be able to shoot. Something is missing in them. The stills even lack the depth and vibrancy of the HD video the same camera produces. My wife's 3.3 megapixel camera (a Sony) produces much better stills. It wouldn't bother me a bit if Sony had simply not included a still photo option. See all 15 customer reviews...
